Lying is often associated with deception, betrayal, or immorality, but in reality, not all lies are harmful. There are those that, far from harming, can safeguard relationships, protect lives, and even spur personal growth. The ability to lie, when used with discernment, can be a valuable resource for navigating human complexity. The key is differentiating between a selfish lie and a beneficial lie—one told to avoid a greater evil or promote a greater good.

A classic example of a beneficial lie is the "white lie," one used to spare someone's feelings. Telling a loved one that their new haircut looks good, even if it's not entirely true, can preserve their self-esteem and strengthen the trust between you. These small untruths act as social lubricants, avoiding unnecessary conflict and maintaining harmony in our interactions. Without them, living together would be much harsher and more painful.

Once, we encouraged a friend who was just starting his bodybuilding routine, saying he was getting in shape in his first month. We didn't want to break his heart, but after several months and so much encouragement, he always looked the same; well, a real man who has achieved a good body shape. If we had told him otherwise, he might have given up and not continued with his dream... It's a great personal contribution to support others in the process and not at the end. However, the world doesn't see it that way. Sometimes the newborn is more important than the progress of the pregnancy. That's how we are, and it's unfortunate...

La mentira suele asociarse con la decepción, la traición o la inmoralidad, pero en realidad, no todas las mentiras son dañinas. Existen aquellas que, lejos de perjudicar, pueden salvaguardar relaciones, proteger vidas e incluso impulsar el crecimiento personal. La capacidad de mentir, cuando se usa con discernimiento, puede ser un recurso valioso para navegar por la complejidad humana. La clave está en diferenciar entre una mentira egoísta y una benefactora, aquella que se dice con el fin de evitar un mal mayor o promover un bien superior.

Un ejemplo clásico de mentira benefactora es la "mentira piadosa", aquella que se emplea para no herir los sentimientos de alguien. Decirle a un ser querido que su nuevo corte de pelo luce bien, aunque no sea del todo cierto, puede preservar su autoestima y fortalecer la confianza entre ambos. Estas pequeñas falsedades actúan como lubricantes sociales, evitando conflictos innecesarios y manteniendo la armonía en nuestras interacciones. Sin ellas, la convivencia sería mucho más áspera y dolorosa.

Cierta vez a un amigo que comenzaba su rutina de hacer ejercicio de fisiculturismo, le aupábamos que se estaba poniendo en forma en su primer mes. Vaya que no queríamos romperle el corazón y uno le veía siempre igual, después de varios meses y de tanto alentarlo, pues; el hombre de verdad que obtuvo una buena figura de cuerpo. Si le hubiéramos dicho lo contrario, capaz abandona y no continúa con su sueño… Es un gran aporte personal, apoyar al semejante en el proceso y no al final del mismo, no obstante; el mundo no lo piensa así. A veces importa más el recién nacido que la evolución del embarazo, así somos y es lamentable…
